Our highly trained professionals have many years of experience in endodontics. We can remove infection, repair damage, and ensure a healthy, painless smile in your future.
What Is a Root Canal Procedure?
While most people use the term "root canal" as shorthand for the procedure, also called “root canal therapy”, a root canal is actually an anatomical structure inside the tooth. A typical tooth is made up of layers: the hard outermost layer of enamel, the dentin just beneath, and connective tissue. All of these layers wrap around a central cavity called the root canal, which contains the tooth root and a soft tissue called the pulp.
When the pulp or root is damaged by infection and becomes painful, a root canal procedure can alleviate discomfort. During root canal therapy, Dr. DiRezze gently removes damaged tissue and seals the tooth. A root canal procedure also serves as a preventive treatment: by eliminating the source of the infection before it takes over the entire tooth, it can guard against the need for tooth extraction.
How Do I Know If I Need a Root Canal?
While any number of issues can leave a tooth vulnerable to infection, cracks, faulty crowns, or even repeated dental procedures on a tooth are among the most common causes. In the early stages of a tooth infection, there are often few to no signs of an issue. However, as the condition worsens, common symptoms include:
- Severe toothaches when chewing
- Tooth decay
- Unusually long-lasting tooth sensitivity when eating hot or cold foods
- Tooth discoloration
- Swollen or tender gums
- Pimples in the gums that keep coming back
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Despite the procedure’s reputation for pain, root canal therapy is typically no more uncomfortable than receiving a dental filling. In fact, avoiding treatment can allow the infection to progress and is often much more painful than the procedure itself.
When you arrive for your procedure, Dr. DiRezze and his team will provide you with an anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. We can also provide further sedation for your comfort. A small rubber dam must then be set around the tooth to keep it dry. Once preparations are complete, Dr. DiRezze will conservatively alter the tooth to extract the infected tissue. After it has been completely emptied, he wash the canal and smooth the tooth root to eliminate footholds for future bacteria.
With a qualified team trained in endodontics, Shelby Dental can relieve tooth pain in a quick, efficient procedure.
Depending on your needs, the appointment may be split into two parts. During the second stage, the canal is filled with gutta-percha, a sterile, rubber-like material that will provide support. The tooth is then sealed and covered with either a dental filling or crown. Your restoration will be made of quality, durable materials that are incredibly lifelike and can last for years.
